<h2>The opportunity</h2>
In 2017, SNF committed to supporting healthcare transformation in Greece. Following discussions with the Greek Ministry of Health, SNF announced an investment of nearly $1 billion to modernise the country’s health infrastructure.
Key figures and project highlights include:

Three new hospitals funded and developed across Greece:<ul><li>SNF General Hospital of Komotini</li><li>SNF University Paediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki</li><li> SNF General Hospital of Sparta</li></ul>
These hospitals aim to modernise healthcare delivery and bring integrated healthcare to underserved regions. After their completion, the facilities will transfer to the Ministry of Health (MoH) to manage.
Lexica’s Healthcare Strategy and Planning team, led by Deirdre Foley Woods, developed the strategic and operational models for these hospitals. This included:<ul><li>Assessing population health needs and forecasting demand</li><li>Designing care models tailored to regional needs</li><li>Planning operational and clinical functions </li><li>Supporting the design for modern, efficient hospital facilities</li></ul>
These hospitals aim to serve as models of excellence, both in Greece and internationally.

<h3>Our approach</h3>
In addition to financial support, SNF’s programme brings a fresh approach to healthcare design, with plans for new hospitals to be completed by 2025. The projects include:<ul><li>$500 million for the three hospitals</li><li>Hospitals designed for high energy efficiency and sustainability using natural light, ventilation, and green spaces</li><li>State-of-the-art facilities built in partnership with architects like Llewelyn Davies and Renzo Piano</li></ul>
These new facilities are located in healthcare-deprived regions, aiming to provide universal and high-quality care.
Lexica played a key role by providing healthcare planning services to shape these facilities, including:<ul><li>Working closely with SNF and renowned architects to create patient-centred and sustainable designs</li><li>Planning for collaborative, nature-focused environments that foster relaxation for patients, their families, and staff</li></ul>
Our health planning expertise helped ensure these hospitals would offer the highest quality of care while promoting well-being for all who enter their doors. <h2>Our impact</h2>
Working alongside the Greek Ministry of Health and local health authorities, Lexica helped implement several key strategies to support the project’s long-term success. This included:
- Creating a workforce plan to support new models of care and flexible work structures
- Helping establish governance structures for efficient, quality healthcare delivery
- Supporting the adoption of new practices needed for sustainable operations
These plans were enacted into law, showing the Ministry’s commitment to sustaining high-quality healthcare and attracting top medical talent. 
Highlights of each hospital:<ul><li>SNF University Paediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki: Greece’s first dedicated children’s hospital outside of Athens, it will offer essential paediatric and adolescent services. This includes:</li><li>Emergency and surgical care, cardiology, oncology, and intensive care</li><li>A new Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health in a separate building</li><li>SNF General Hospital of Komotini: Replacing the 1937 ‘Sismanogleio’ General Hospital, this new facility will serve as a secondary care hub for Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The hospital will be surrounded by forested areas and therapeutic gardens accessible to all visitors.</li><li>SNF General Hospital of Sparta: Designed to improve healthcare access in Sparta, Laconia, and the wider Peloponnese, this hospital will feature a range of specialties, including cardiology, urology, and paediatrics. It will also include an adult mental health unit with dedicated outdoor spaces.</li></ul>
Together, these hospitals are set to transform healthcare in Greece, providing new, accessible, and efficient facilities that set a standard for quality and care.
