<h3>The opportunity </h3>
<p><a href="https://www.spirehealthcare.com/spire-bushey-hospital/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spire Bushey</a> is a leading hospital within the group, providing a range of services, including orthopaedic and ophthalmic surgeries dominating the surgical lists. The Bushey Hospital identified the need to expand services with a new ultra-clean theatre, to enable the addition of more complex surgeries to meet expanding demand.<br /></p>
<p>Each area of the hospital was split into ‘work zones’, to clearly define each package, with numerous temporary phases to facilitate the expansion of the live and thriving hospital with minimal disruption. </p>
<p>The work zones included:</p><ul><li>A new, ultra-clean theatre (the sixth theatre for the hospital) connects to the existing theatre department</li><li>Associated ancillary areas including, theatre prep, and anaesthetic</li><li>A nine-bed recovery unit, including the opportunity for segregated paediatric care when required</li><li>Additional storage (both sterile and general storage)</li><li>A new Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) on the ground floor, doubling the existing capacity and enabling future provision for further expansion</li><li>A new theatre staff rest area, theatre admin spaces, improved staff changing facilities and ten new patient bedrooms</li></ul><h3>Our approach </h3>
<p>Lexica was involved from the start of the construction phase. Our service began as a client-side project management role, managing the multi-disciplinary consultants and contractor on behalf of the Spire Estates team. However, this developed over time into a programme management role, holding responsibility for the construction, information technology (IT) and FF&amp;E workstreams, including scheme cost monitoring.<br /></p>
<p>Fundamental to the successful delivery of this project was the collaborative, collegiate and open project culture established across the project team. Lexica championed an Integrated Project Team (IPT) approach, which was applied to manage the significant expansion at a hospital working at capacity, minimising disruption to both staff and patients.</p>
<p>Everyone understood the importance of the project and its objectives, and integrating with the Spire Central teams (including estates, IT, purchasing, clinical and engineering) proved successful in solving problems in the project's best interests.<br /></p><h3>Our impact </h3>
<p>Lexica embedded a culture of continuous user engagement, managing the expectations of the specific departments, which ultimately assured satisfaction with the finished rooms.</p>
<p>The project was completed in March 2020, with the final account delivered under budget. Initial feedback from the Spire and Bushey clients was incredibly positive, with the patient experience and staff satisfaction improving across the hospital.</p>
