<h3>The opportunity </h3>
<p>The funding was secured from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, a £1bn government initiative supporting its commitment to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. The grant was the largest of its kind awarded, expected to save more than 5000t of CO2 per year. </p>
<p>Lexica was appointed by the Trust to provide programme management, cost management, sustainability consultancy and project management services for the delivery of two Energy Performance Contracts at Scunthorpe General Hospital, Diana Princess of Wales in Grimsby, and Goole and District Hospital.</p><h3>Our approach</h3>
<p>Our <a href="https://www.lexica.co.uk/services/net-zero" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Net Zero team</a> was engaged to develop an application to Phase 1 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. The measures included decommissioning the coal fire boilers, installing LED lighting, roofing upgrades, and ground source heat pumps.</p>
<p>The programme timescales were defined by the grant offer and posed great constraints from the outset. From the point of the grant award, the Trust had just six months to design, procure and deliver the measures. An extension to the project until March 2022 was approved by Salix Finance, the body administering the funding on behalf of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.</p><h3>Our impact </h3>
<p>A notable achievement within this timeframe was replacing the coal-fired system at Goole and District Hospital with new, efficient gas boilers and a CHP unit. Other successful measures include wall and loft insulation, battery management system replacements, installation of LED lighting and emergency lighting, asbestos removal, and upgrades to nine plantrooms.</p>
<p>Challenges with the supply chain and the larger scale project made it difficult to make similar progress on the second contract, which comprised 10 work packages. However, the drilling of a 550m borehole at Scunthorpe General Hospital marked a major milestone. A step test was undertaken on the water, and this confirmed that it would be possible to power the hospital site using a ground source heat pump.</p>
<p>NLaG is now exploring alternative sources of funding to deliver decarbonisation measures and continue its journey to achieving net zero carbon by 2040.</p>
