<h2>The opportunity</h2>
<p dir="ltr">The idea of bringing Ireland’s three children’s hospitals together began in 1993. By 2006, the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) was created to make this vision a reality, aiming to build one of the world’s top children’s hospitals.</p>
<p>The new hospital will combine the children’s hospitals at Crumlin and Temple Street and paediatric services at Tallaght University Hospital. Located alongside St. James’s Hospital in Dublin, this facility will offer 39 specialties, providing paediatric, adult, and maternity care all in one place.</p><h3><strong>The hospital at a glance</strong></h3>
<p dir="ltr">The final facility will cover 160,000 m², with over 6,100 rooms across seven floors. Key features include:</p><ul><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">380 private inpatient rooms, each with an en-suite and a bed for parents</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">93 day beds and 60 critical care beds</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">22 state-of-the-art operating theatres, including specialised theatres for heart surgery, neurosurgery, and orthopaedics</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">4 acres of outdoor space, with 14 gardens and courtyards, a helipad, and 1000 underground parking spaces</p></li></ul>
<p dir="ltr">The New Children’s Hospital will not only provide critical care but will also be a centre for education, training, and research, supporting children, families, and staff alike.<br /></p>

<p dir="ltr">Lexica helped create the national framework for children’s services, setting standards for space and healing environments. Our Healthcare Strategy and Planning team analysed future paediatric care needs, accounting for the main hospital, two urgent care satellites, and secondary care services nationwide.</p>
<p dir="ltr">By engaging with hospital staff, families, young patients, and community members, we developed a model that includes satellite centres at Tallaght Hospital and Connolly Hospital, as well as several community-based centres.</p>
<p dir="ltr">From 2008 to 2015, Lexica continued working with NPHDB, focusing on planning, stakeholder engagement, and design reviews. We also supported the new hospital’s joint governance model and provided clinical leadership support.</p>
